Prevalence

  • 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States have been raped in their lifetime
  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced some form of contact sexual violence
  • 91% of victims of rape and sexual assault are female

Reporting

  • Only 25% of sexual assaults are reported to police
  • 63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police
  • 12% of child sexual abuse is reported to authorities

Impact

  • 94% of women who are raped experience symptoms of PTSD
  • 33% of women who are raped contemplate suicide
  • 13% of women who are raped attempt suicide

Perpetrators

  • 8 out of 10 rapes are committed by someone known to the victim
  • 39% of rapes are committed by an acquaintance
  • 33% of rapes are committed by a current or former intimate partner
